Sounds like a political boondoggle of nearly unprecedented scale. Governor Meatball must be frothing at the mouth. Maybe they can build a billion dollar bridge to their banana island.

Make an island offshore and soom enough some realtor is going to get the ‘inside track’ from one of his ‘good buddies’ and start selling choice properties for cash only, so that loans requiring flood insurance aren’t needed.

But by the time the project is completed, the sea levels will have risen yet again and the project would have to be ramped even higher.

Exactly right. They’ve already acknowledged this by saying, “… would be uninhabited, although day trips for surfing or fishing might be allowed,…”

The “might” is acutually a “will”, so now you need shops infrastructure (i.e. fresh water, roads, ferries, etc.), not to mention all the retail “opportunities” to add to the economy/tax base. And, of course, they’ll need 85-90% subsidized flood insurance to make it all affordable.

Also notice how they’re already ear-marking recovery funds for this? Better that than, I dunno, helping people who lost their homes/business, right?
