New York City says it has exceeded its post-Sandy housing recovery goal, reimbursing 500 homeowners and starting construction on 500 homes by Labor Day.
The director of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Office of Housing Recovery tells the Wall Street Journal it expects to begin construction on at least 50 homes a week going forward.
Amy Peterson says the 500 goal was the initial goal.
Momentum picked up after de Blasio rebooted the program this spring.
The Build It Back program was created in June 2013. But as of Jan. 1, no households had complete plans for the work.
De Blasio announced the 500-homes goal in April. He eliminated income categories that had held up some applications, assigned city Buildings Department inspectors exclusively to the initiative and made other changes.
