NMB Launches Capital Markets Unit

June 21, 2007

Newman Martin and Buchan Limited, an independent Lloyd’s insurance and reinsurance broker, has launched a capital markets division to complement its reinsurance advisory and placement services.

Mark Burbidge and Paul Dunster have joined the company to run the division, which plans to offer “a broad range of services including the design, structure, and implementation of bespoke capital market solutions,” said the bulletin. It will give the firm’s clients increased access to “global capital markets capacity either as a stand alone solution or to complement traditional (re)insurance products.”

Chris Sims, managing director of NMB indicated that by broadening the scope of service that NMB can offer, the firm recognizes that “accessing the capital markets for risk transfer is now very much in the mainstream and we believe that insurance and reinsurance buyers will increasingly consider them as a necessary component of their capital management strategy.”

Burbridge “has spent much of the past 20 years at the forefront of design and implementation of Alternative Risk Transfer products in the reinsurance industry,” the announcement noted. He most recently served as a consultant to a Lloyd’s agency and an asset management company.

Dunster is an experienced London reinsurance broker and underwriter, who has structured reinsurance programs for a wide range of classes of business.

Burbidge noted: “The convergence of the banking and traditional reinsurance markets makes it possible to access the vast resources of the capital markets to achieve risk transfer. We believe that the interest of these markets in the insurance sector is here to stay and it represents a real opportunity for insurance and reinsurance buyers.”
