Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame to Host 2006 Induction Ceremony, May 18

The Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame will hold a dinner and ceremony as it inducts 2006 leaders of companies and movers and shakers in the insurance world into its Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies will take place on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at the Olmsted Center, Drake University beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Some of the financial sponsors of the awards include: Iowa Agents of Des Moines; Independent Agents of Iowa; Iowa Insurance Institute; Iowa Association of Health Underwriters, Grinnell Mutual, Iowa Mutual, Life Investors, American Republic, and Farmers Mutual Hail.

This is the 10th year for the Hall of Fame, which recognizes past and present business people who have contributed to an industry that has become one of the leading economic engines of Iowa, according to the material released by the organization.

This year’s inductees are:

Judith A. Brannon, retired vice president of GuideOne Insurance.
She spent 36 years with the property and casualty insurer, and in 1992 was the first woman at the company to be named an officer. .

Kent M. Forney, a Des Moines attorney, who has practiced law with Bradshaw, Fowler, Proctor & Fairgrave since 1958, and has extensive expertise in insurance. He has served as general counsel to the Iowa insurance commissioner and was instrumental in drafting legislation that created the state’s mutual holding company act.

James W. Hubbell Jr., a retired chairman of Equitable of Iowa Cos. (now part of ING Group) in Des Moines. Hubbell is the great-grandson of one of the founders of Equitable of Iowa, which he joined in 1946 as a clerk in the city loan section.

J. Scott McIntyre, chairman of United Fire & Casualty Co. in Cedar Rapids. McIntyre has served since 1975 as chairman of United Fire.
Bruce G. Kelley, president of Des Moines-based EMC Insurance Cos., wrote in his letter of nomination that when McIntyre was asked in the second grade to name the world’s most important invention, he shouted “compound interest.”

Edwin J. (Hub) Mulock, now deceased, will also be honored. He was the former chairman of Central Life Assurance Co., now AmerUs Group Co. in Des Moines. Mulock joined the insurance industry in 1907, and co-owned an insurance agency in Des Moines until 1938, when he was named president of Central Life. He later became chairman, and served on the board until his death in 1964.
