Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger says the 2007 storm season in Kansas so far has accumulated $230 million in losses of insured property and crops during the month of May 2007.
“We experienced a terrible loss in Greensburg from the tornado of May 4, and then the hail and windstorms from the rest of the month just added to the devastation for Kansas,” said Praeger.
The Greensburg tornado of May 4, 2007 is estimated to result in approximately $153 million in insured property losses. The remainder of the month of May 2007 is estimated to have caused approximately $73.5 million in insured property losses, with approximately 15,690 claims reported during the month. These figures do not include the Greensburg tornado losses of May 4, 2007. They also do not include any estimated flood losses, which are covered by the National Flood Insurance Program.
The estimated insured crop wind and hail losses of the month of May 2007 is approximately $3.5 million with approximately 1,000 storm claims reported for the month.
