Energy savings and an improved fire insurance rating are two of the likely benefits Starkville, Miss. officials are touting now that a new fire station has opened in the western part of the city.
Officials told The Commercial Dispatch that the new station is built to reduce energy consumption, which saves the city money. It also improves coverage in the area, which officials hope will mean an improved fire rating and lower insurance rates.
The city of Starkville’s fire rating is currently a 5 on a scale of 10, with 1 being the best; if it improves to a 4, officials say, business owners would save significantly in fire insurance. Starkville is to get its latest rating in the fall.
The new station is designed to accommodate an engine company and Emergency Medical Services company if growth in the west side of Starkville dictates the need. It’s also equipped with a generator that can provide power for any function.
The station also solves a coverage-radius issue in west Starkville, which fell out of all four of the other stations’ areas.
“We’re shooting for the two-minute mark (for average response time),” Chief Rodger Mann said.
