Ghost asks a valid question. I presume the key for this legislation was economic rather than philosophical. Although, I am not sure how this will reduce the cost of Illegal Aliens auto accident costs. Perhaps a reduction in the UM claims?
Couple of potential factors that I can think of. If a driver has a license (regardless of legal status in state) they are more likely to stay at the scene of an accident and exchange insurance information.
Needing to prove insurance before they can get the license means that more drivers will be insured (at least to start with) and the appropriate premium charged and paid. Admittedly there is a little bit of self interest here, more premium means more commission to agents. Also a reduced E&O exposure as those policies will now (hopefully) have all the drivers listed with the correct driving history for each driver. Also, most insurance carriers require valid licenses for drivers listed on the policy to maintain comp & collision coverages. Again, more commission.
Another thing to consider. Just because law enforcement cannot use the data base for deportation purposes, doesn’t mean the tax department cannot use it to track tax evaders. More money for government.
Check the blue laws for your home state. Odds are pretty good you’ve broken one of them, so go ahead and turn yourself in. Or speeding… that speed limit reads 55 mph, not “it’s safe to go 60”.
Also if I recall it’s illegal to drink milk on a train while passing through North Carolina. Being as I’ve done that, care to arrest me?
You people are nothing but discriminating. I am a US born AMERICAN. I know people that have been brought here, without their say when they were children, and they consider themselves AMERICAN. They consider this place their home. This is what hope looks like to them, here you are calling them criminals, and every bad name in the book. You don;t realize how rough life is for these people. ALl they are trying to do is survive in a world where they have no name but “illegal” or “alien”. They are people, and not all of them break the damn law. Send em all back though., just like you want, we’ll see how many of you lazy shits get off unemployment and start working. We’ll see how good of an effect it has on our economy. You people are nothing but mislead, prejudice, and plain stupid.
Chill mate, you have to remember that a majority of insurance agents are fairly conservative, and that the knee-jerk reaction of many (but not all) conservatives to anything new or different is intolerance.
The irony of the situation is that considering that we were a nation built on immigrants seeking a better life (and could all be considered illegal immigrants if you asked the Native Americans), and now we are trying to prevent others from doing the same.
Well, in my opinion (and I’m only thirteen) some of these comments are disgusting and deplorable i don’t know how some people could care less about these people who, needless to say, have technically made up the economy by working the jobs most Americans don’t even want. I’m really not that surprised though its expected out of the ignorant people we all know exist.
Driving is a privalage, not a right. What part of ILLEGAL immigrant am I missing?
You missed the “i” and “e” in privilege!
Privilege! spell check!

@ GHOST=^ SOME “ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS” DIDNT HAVE A CHOICE TO B HERE!
It is amazing how the main people who sponsored this Bill are Hispanic.
I got an idea…perhaps this US govt could start doing what the people they supposedly represent actually want. Illinois has failed.
Why is this a failure?
As an American citzen, if my name was connected in any way to “illegal” I would be arrested – not rewarded!

Damn. Have another coffee. You’re ranting like a liberal.
