Midwest Storms Continue; At Least 1 Killed in Illinois Tornado

By | April 10, 2015

One person was reported killed and several others injured when a large tornado swept through Northern Illinois on April 9.

The Illinois towns of Fairdale, Rochelle and Kirkland sustained major damage. Fairdale, a community of 200 about 20 miles southeast of Rockford, was especially hard hit.

The Weather Channel reported that an 87-year old woman was killed there and that nearly every home in the town sustained damage.

A video taken by storm chasers and aired on the Accuweather website showed an 18-wheeler being toppled on an interstate in Northern Illinois near the churning tornado.

The storm system moved through a day after another system brought tornadoes, hail and high winds to other parts of the Midwest.

A handful of tornadoes touched down mostly in rural areas of Kansas and Oklahoma, causing minimal damage in the earlier storm system, the Associated Press reported.

Hail, on the other hand, caused significant damage. Hundreds of St. Louis-area residents are claiming damage following a hail storm this week.

The AP reported that State Farm has received at least 300 claims. About 80 percent of those claims are for hail-damaged vehicles, including about a dozen with damage so bad they are not drivable.

More severe weather is expected today from the Texas Gulf Coast through the mid-Atlantic region, according to the National Weather Service.
