Stephen W. Lilienthal, a highly regarded insurance industry executive, has joined CNA Insurance in a newly created role as president and CEO of CNA’s $6.2 billion primary property and casualty operation.
Lilienthal will have responsibility for CNA’s worldwide field operations, global specialty lines, all primary standard lines, risk management and technology operations. Lilienthal will be nominated to a seat on the CNA Financial Board of Directors.
Lilienthal, 51, joins CNA from St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company where he was executive vice president and head of their $4.1 billion U.S. insurance operations, which included their Commercial Lines Group and Global Specialty Practices. He joined St. Paul in 1998 following its acquisition of USF&G. At USF&G, Lilienthal held numerous senior management positions including president of its Commercial Insurance Group. During his tenure at USF&G (1993-1998), he was also executive vice president and chief underwriting officer, as well as executive vice president of Field Operations and Development, and senior vice president of Commercial Lines. Lilienthal began his insurance career at The Travelers Insurance Company in 1972.
