Members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) unanimously elected New Hampshire Insurance Commissioner Roger Sevigny as secretary-treasurer of the association.
The election was held at NAIC’s summer meeting in Washington. D.C.
“I congratulate Commissioner Sevigny on his election to the office of secretary treasurer and commend his commitment to the NAIC leadership team,” said fellow New Englander, Alessandro Iuppa, NAIC president and Maine insurance superintendent.
Sevigny fills the vacancy created by the retirement of former NAIC Secretary-Treasurer Eric Serna, who was also superintendent of the New Mexico Insurance Division. Serna agreed to retire June 14 as part of a settlement approved by the Public Regulation Commission. Serna is under investigation by the attorney general for his dealings with a bank that does business with the state insurance division.
Serna in a letter to the PRC said the “inaccurate rumors, innuendo and speculation” had been disruptive, and he hoped his retirement would allow the division to re-focus on its work.
The attorney general’s investigation will continue, although the PRC will drop its separate internal investigation of Serna.
Sevigny, a native of New Hampshire, was graduated from St. Anselm College with a B.A. in Biology. He holds a commission in the U.S. Army having retired at the rank of Colonel.
Prior to becoming Commissioner, Sevigny held the position of assistant commissioner at the New Hampshire department. Before that he worked in the insurance industry at Travelers Insurance for over 30 years in a variety of technical and management positions.
