I think the pads should be made optional.

Hey Ivan, this isn’t Rugby or Australian rules football they are playing. These are very large human beings going full speed every play. The collisions are very violent and these macho guys who think they don’t need padding are very stupid. They will pay a big price after they are forced to retire due to injuries. I read that an average running backs career is 7 years in the NFL. Offensive linemen last the longest at about 10 years, but they were all kinds of protection including knee braces.

It has been a joke for several years how little protective padding is on some players. The wide receivers and defensive backs are the worst offenders because they think the pads slow them down too much. They then wonder why they get hurt. The far bigger problem is with head injuries. The human head can only stand just so many hits without them being like a punch drunk fighter. Concusssions keep getting more numerous. I don’t know if a helmut can be designed to protect against a 280 lb linebacker hitting someone at full speed.

Pretty soon they’ll be wearing those fake sumo outfits people wearing to pretend they are sumo wrestlers…all blown up like people in bubbles bouncing off each other…

I hear you, but I can’t believe teams who are paying millions of dollars to players will allow them to play with no padding on the legs like many of the wide receivers and defensive backs do. These guys sit on injured reserve and still collect their checks. Every quarterback should be required to wear the kevlar protection on their ribs. They take a pounding and broken or bruised ribs are a real problem.

Doesn’t sound like this is a safety issue with the players, it’s more about power. They probably would have accepted it if it had been part of the CBA, but when the commis rules they want to fight, even if it is their best interest.

Actually less pads would probably make it safer. Helmets offer a false sense of security and players use them as weapons instead of their intended use as protection. Take away the helmet and watch the number of head injuries plummet, ironic no?

So you took my sign in moniker. I wonder how popular the game would be if the players were dressed like Rugby or Australian rules football. NFL players are so much bigger than players in those sports. American fans do love to see their collisions on the field, particularly on kick offs and punts. I knew some old men who played ball back in the leather helmut days and they didn’t have concussions because they didn’t lead with their head on tackles. Their problem was getting their teeth knocked out.
