Leave it to Congress to think that a new law and creation of even more new federal crimes will magically solve the problem. This bill would make stealing metal a federal crime. You might wonder, “but how is this possibly a Federal law enforcement issue instead of a concern for state and local law enforcement” or “isn’t that unconstitutional?” You see, this law would apply to stolen metal which is used in interstate commerce or which can be claimed to have even affected interstate commerce. Talk about a SCOTUS decision that needs to be overturned…
There is a direct correlation between metal theft and meth heads. I live in missouri and I am afraid to fall asleep as I would awaken with my fillings gone from my teeth.
The problem is that as long as there are countries in the world buying metals for their manufacturing process, there will be thefts risking themselves to syeal it to sale it in the underworld. It is like drugs. As long as there is someone paying for it, the countries that prodece it will continue in the process.
Metal theft will continue to be an issue as it provides drug addicts with an easy way to generate the cash they need to support their habit. Companies must take proactive steps to product their materials so that thieves will be deterred and or caught in the act. Preserve video footage and get statements from any witnesses to insure that law enforcement can prepare a solid case for prosecutors.
Tennessee now requires individuals to register when selling scrap metal. Look at our rate! Big item not mentioned – thefts from cemetery ornaments and plaques.
