Repeal of Illegal Immigrant Driver License Bill Passes Calif. Senate Committee

As expected, a bill to repeal legislation allowing undocumented aliens to obtain California drivers’ licenses, passed from the Senate Transportation Committee by a 10-2 vote, the American Agents Alliance said. SBX3 1 (Oller) will now be heard on the Senate floor, then head over to the Assembly Transportation Committee and a vote on the Assembly floor. If, as expected, the bill is passed by the Senate and Assembly, it will land on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s desk. As he pledged to repeal the illegal immigrant drivers’ license bill during his campaign, it is a sure bet he will sign this.

Senator Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), the author of SB 60, met with Schwarzenegger last Friday to address concerns over security relating to providing illegal immigrants access to drivers’ licenses. According to the Los Angeles Times, Cedillo and other Democrats want Schwarzenegger to say he will sign similar legislation next year, if it addressed those security concerns. We have been told that Cedillo is in support of repealing SB 60.

The bill would take effect Jan. 1, 2004, the day SB 60 was slated to become operational.
