Television stations in Corpus Christi and Harlingen have begun airing a series of news reports on hurricane awareness, the Insurance Council of Texas reported. The impetus to focus on what homeowners along the Texas coast can do to prepare for such storms was provided by the ICT.
ICT spokesman Mark Hanna approached KIII-TV in Corpus Christi and KGBT-TV in Harlingen in February suggesting topics, offering video and providing building code experts. Hanna worked with the station’s reporters and producers to make sure that homeowners in each region received the latest information on what they could do to secure their homes in the event of a hurricane.
“This was a joint exercise involving ICT with the Texas Department of Insurance, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH), the Texas Manufactured Homes Association, Home Depot, local insurance agents as well as local engineers and building contractors,” Hanna said. “These news reports have given us the opportunity to offer loss mitigation tips to homeowners in existing homes, manufactured homes and new homes. It should be an informative news series for every viewer.”
In Corpus Christi, ABC affiliate KIII-TV, Channel 3, began airing their Hurricane Awareness news series Monday and it runs through Friday, May 20, on the 10 p.m. news.
In Harlingen, CBS affiliate KGBT-TV, Channel 4, begins their Hurricane Awareness news series on the 10 p.m. news Sunday, May 22 through Thursday, May 26. KGBT-TV will follow the news series with a 30-minute special report to air Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m. June 1 is the start of the 2005 hurricane season.
