Louisiana AG: Repairs on Homes with Chinese Drywall Set to Begin

February 22, 2011

About 109 Louisiana homeowners impacted by defective drywall will soon see relief as plans are finalized to start the first home repairs, under a court approved pilot remediation program, Attorney General Buddy Caldwell has announced.

This pilot program is expected to remediate approximately 300 homes in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida at no cost to the homeowners. In Louisiana, about 109 homes located primarily in the parishes of St. Tammany, Ascension, East Baton Rouge, and Orleans are included in the pilot program. To qualify, substantially all of the tainted drywall in a home must be manufactured by Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin (KPT).

“KPT recently began removing drywall from the first of the pilot program homes in Florida, and I expect that remediation work will soon begin in Louisiana,” Caldwell stated. “Getting Chinese drywall out of Louisiana homes is the first step in the process of restoring home values.”

Caldwell said his office in conjunction with other state agencies will monitor implementation of the pilot program to ensure that all demolition, remediation, and restoration are conducted in accordance with state law.

“While we hope that the pilot program will be successful, we will also remain watchful because it is a test program whose outcome is still uncertain,” Caldwell said. If successful, Caldwell hopes the pilot program will expand to include not only additional Louisiana homeowners, but also additional drywall manufacturers.

Caldwell filed suit a year ago on behalf of the state against KPT and other defendants who manufactured, distributed, sold, and installed defective and toxic drywall in Louisiana during the rebuilding efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Although the Attorney General’s Office cannot represent homeowners in prosecuting their personal claims for drywall damage, Caldwell will continue to monitor the pilot program and keep the public informed of any new developments.
