Texas Safety Officials: Nearly 16K Vehicles Stolen in December 2014

December 9, 2015

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the potential for vehicle thefts is high in December. The DPS reported that 5,717 automobiles, pickups and motorcycles were recorded stolen in December 2014, making it one of the highest months for vehicle thefts that year, outside of the summer months.

In addition, more than 13,190 vehicle burglaries were reported and $13.3 million in property stolen last December, also making it one of the highest months that year.

The Texas Department of Transportation says the month of December is also one of the most dangerous for alcohol-related traffic crashes. The state experienced 2,412 alcohol-related traffic crashes during last year’s holiday season (Dec. 1, 2014 – Jan. 1, 2015), resulting in 190 serious injuries and 110 fatalities. This was nearly an 8 percent increase in alcohol-related traffic fatalities over the previous holiday season.

TxDOT is running a “Plan While You Can” campaign, urging party goers to plan for a sober ride this holiday season. The campaign runs through Jan. 1, 2016, and coincides with an increase in DUI patrols and enforcement.

Since Nov. 7, 2000, fatalities resulting from motor vehicle crashes on Texas roadways have totaled 51,832. A leading cause of fatalities continues to be alcohol, with distracted driving and a lack of seat belt use also being major causes.
