North Texas Slammed by Storms: Homes Damaged, School Bus Stranded

A severe thunderstorm, possibly a tornado, damaged at least seven homes scattered over a rural area of North Texas.

The storm roared through the area between Weatherford and Mineral Wells about 6:15 p.m. Monday at a time when National Weather Service reported its radar showed a possible tornado in the vicinity.

Parker County spokesman Joel Kertok tells the Weatherford Democrat that buildings were damaged on both sides of U.S 180 about a half-mile east of Cool, about 40 miles west of Fort Worth. Some vehicles were damaged by flying debris.

Kertok says no injuries were reported.

Emergency personnel also waded through thigh-deep water to rescue children from a school bus caught on a flooded North Texas road.

The Denton Independent School District bus was in water as high as the wheel hubs during Tuesday morning’s rescue.

Parts of the region received heavy rain Monday night, leading to day-after flooding along some roads.

KXAS-TV reports that the bus got trapped near Aubrey, about 40 miles northwest of Dallas.

Rescuers walked through the water to reach the school bus, which had the back door open to allow children out. The children were carried to safety.

District officials didn’t immediately return messages.

Forecasters predict a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the Dallas-Fort Worth area through Thursday.
