Oklahoma public sector employers have reduced the rate of employee injury and illness to 3.8 per 100 workers, down from 4.0 in 2014, the Oklahoma Department of Labor reported.
With the recent reduction, Oklahoma has seen a 47 percent decline in the incidence rate over the past 16 years, the ODOL said.
The department attributed the decline in part to its Public Employee Occupational Safety and Health Division (PEOSH), which has conducted a targeted and focused initiative aimed at reducing the rate of illness and injury among workers in the public sector.
Oklahoma collects injury and illness data from nearly 5,300 public sector employers, according to Labor Commissioner Melissa McLawhorn Houston.
The labor department said that Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data shows that nationwide, public sector employees experienced a higher incidence rate of work-related injuries and illnesses than those in the private sector. The average incident rate for public sector employees nationwide was 5.0 per 100 employees in 2014. In that same year, the private sector incidence rate was 3.2 injuries per 100 employees.
