Texas Mutual Insurance Awards $1M in Safety Grants to Community Colleges

April 18, 2017

Workers’ compensation insurer, Texas Mutual Insurance Co., has awarded a combined $1 million in grants to 10 community colleges across Texas. The grants fund workplace safety courses for employers, workers and the general public through the risk management programs at each college.

Since 1999, Texas Mutual has awarded $5.6 million in safety education grants, and more than 30,000 students have attended free safety courses at various community colleges throughout the past 18 years.

This year was the first year Texas Mutual awarded grants to Angelina College in Lufkin, Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont, Lee College in Baytown, and Texarkana College to establish risk management programs. These grants already support risk management programs at College of the Mainland in Texas City, Midland College, Kilgore College, Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, El Paso Community College and Amarillo College.

Courses at the safety institutes include general topics, such as driver safety, ergonomic safety and OSHA standards, as well as courses tailored to the dominant industries in each college’s region.
