Tenn. Pet Food Maker Recalls Dog Food; Salmonella Detected

Franklin, Tenn.-based Mars Petcare U.S. Inc., recalled of 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food sold in Pennsylvania.

Some bags may be contaminated with Salmonella, which could affect both pets and their owners, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

On Aug. 21, the company announced five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania could also be contaminated and should be thrown away.

The latest recall of the Red Flannel brand dog food applies only to stores in Reedsland and Richlandtown, Pa. The bags have the UPC code 4286900062 and a best by” date of July 12, 2008.

Salmonella can cause serious infection in dogs and cats. Pets with the infections can be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps and vomiting.

Even healthy animals with the infection can pass it to other animals or humans, who could experience the same symptoms. Salmonella is especially dangerous to children, older adults and people with compromised immune systems.

FDA officials detected Salmonella in a sample of the two products during a recent review.
