South Carolina Insurance Director Black Resigns

South Carolina is looking for a new insurance commissioner.

Eleven months after being nominated for the job by Gov. Nikki Haley, David Black has resigned.

Haley has named Gwen Fuller-McGriff as acting director of the  insurance department. Fuller-McGriff has been serving as the department’s director of legal, legislative and external affairs.

Black, former president of Liberty Life, gave no reason for leaving in an email he sent to employees at the department on Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.

Haley spokesperson Rob Godfrey told reporters that Haley wished Black well after his resignation.

“Governor Haley is grateful for David Black’s service to our states and to the agency,” Godfrey said. “As director, Black led the department through the transition to a new administration and sought to make it a customer-friendly, pro-business agency.”

Black was confirmed to the post in February by the state Senate.

“We want to do all we can to be pro-business in this state,” Black said at the announcement ceremony with the governor last January. “You can’t have economic growth and jobs if you don’t have capital and capital preservation and creation. ” He said the insurance industry is “instrumental” in creating that capital.

Black replaced Scott Richardson, a former GOP state senator who served in the post for four years under former Gov. Mark Sanford.
