Former North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Ingram Dies

January 9, 2013

John Ingram, former North Carolina insurance commissioner who made runs for governor and the U.S. Senate, has died. He was 83.

Charles Brown said his brother-in-law died at his Myrtle Beach, S.C. home Sunday after suffering a heart attack.

Ingram was elected to the N.C. General Assembly in 1970. Two years later, Ingram was elected to the first of three terms as insurance commissioner. He lost to Republican Jesse Helms in the 1978 U.S. Senate race, and also lost a bid for the Democratic nomination for governor in 1984.

Current N.C. Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said Ingram’s commitment to public service and focus on consumer protection as insurance commissioner won’t be forgotten.

Ingram is survived by his wife, Virginia, three daughters and a son.
