North Carolina Man Jailed After 9th DWI Charge

February 7, 2013

Authorities in North Carolina’s Gaston County man said a man convicted seven times for driving while impaired is in jail for a ninth charge of drunken driving.

The Gaston Gazette reported that a District Court judge raised Michael Wayne Upton’s bond from $50,000 to $250,000 at the request of the district attorney’s office.

Police in Cramerton said Upton was stopped early Monday morning after running a red light and traveling in the wrong lane of traffic.

Upton’s most recent DWI conviction came in 2006, but that was for a 1998 offense in Brunswick County. He also has a 2004 conviction in Gaston County. Court records show he’s faced DWI charges in Carteret and Catawba counties.

His attorney said a clean driving record over the last decade could work in Upton’s favor.
