A Florida Senate committee unanimously confirmed Barry Gilway’s appointment as president of the state-backed insurer Citizens Property Insurance Corp.
The rare legislative oversight of the Citizens leadership appointment came almost 10 months after the board of Citizens hired Gilway to run the insurer.
Members of the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee called Gilway before them, citing public concern over the insurer. They grilled him over his handling of reports of excessive spending in particular and on other management issues.
Soon after Gilway took over the agency he had to deal with questions about spending on travel and meals. He told the committee he did not do a good job handling the controversy. He promised as he has in other statements since then that he is learning about the job running a public agency and that his goal is to have Citizens operate with the “highest standards of transparency, ethics and integrity.”
After questioning Gilway for more than 90 minutes, the panel voted its approval of his being chief of the insurer.
