Mississippi Town Told Liability Insurance Will Rise 15%

January 3, 2014

What the city of Columbus, Miss., pays for liability insurance will increase 15 percent in 2014.

WCBI-TV in Columbus reported that insurance consultant Eddie Mauck told officials this week that three or four major police claims combined with some others in the last three or four years have caught up with the city of Columbus.

Mauck said a tightening insurance market also contributed to the increase.

The city paid about $260,000 this year to cover everything from weed eaters throwing rocks to fires destroying city buildings. The new policy that took effect Jan. 1 will cost $315,000

The city paid about the same amount a decade ago but has seen premiums decrease slightly since then
