Former Alabama Athletic Director’s Family Suing Drug Makers for Wrongful Death

April 8, 2015

The daughter of former University of Alabama Athletic Director Mal Moore has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against two companies that manufactured, promoted and sold a heart medication he took.

Heather Moore Cooke filed suit in U.S. District Court in Birmingham on March 30 against Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, owned by Pfizer, and Par Pharmaceuticals. The suit contends that Moore “suffered severe and debilitating injury to his pulmonary system resulting in his slow and painful death” because of the drug.

The 73-year-old Moore died on March 30, 2013 while awaiting approval for a lung transplant at Duke University Medical Center.

A statement from Pfizer expressed sympathy for Moore and his family but said similar suits “have been dismissed by courts at an early stage, and Wyeth will defend against all claims in this litigation.”
