Fire Destroys Alabama Apartment Complex

June 24, 2015

Four people have been injured in a fire that destroyed a Bessemer, Ala., apartment complex.

Multiple news outlets report the fire broke out Sunday evening at the General Clay Apartments. According to Battalion Chief Kenny Ray, the fire may have started on the 30th Avenue side of the 32-unit, 2-story complex and spread quickly, fueled by strong winds.

Authorities say one person was rescued and three others suffered smoke inhalation. All were transported to local hospitals. Their conditions have not been released.

Officials say the four buildings in the complex were destroyed and about 30 families have been displaced. The Red Cross is housing 97 people at the Bessemer Civic Center until at least mid-week.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze.
