Lawsuit Filed Over Death of Former Jackson, Mississippi Mayor

February 24, 2016

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against St. Dominic Hospital and two doctors who treated the late Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba (SHOW’-kway Lu-MOOM’-bah).

The Clarion-Ledger reports at 9 a.m. on Feb. 25, 2014 Lumumba checked into St. Dominic’s emergency room, complaining of chest pains.

The lawsuit filed by attorney Dennis Sweet IV in Hinds County court states Lumumba waited “hours until hours” before he received medical attention.

An emailed statement from the hospital to the newspaper states that Lumumba received appropriate medical attention from “highly skilled” physicians and clinical staff.

Lumumba led Jackson for eight months before he died. Lumumba had a history of cancer, and heart-related issues. Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said Lumumba died of natural causes.
