With more than 100 candidates to be the next governor of California if the move to recall Gov. Gray Davis (D) is successful, one of the more prominent candidates is apparently throwing in the towel.
Former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, a Republican who had sought to gain the state’s top job, will drop out of the race on Tuesday, according to reports. Ueberroth was set to make a statement at 1 p.m. (PDT) from campaign headquarters in Costa Mesa.
According to the latest Field Poll, Ueberroth was polling at 5 percent. Across California, Ueberroth, who joins Bill Simon as GOP candidates to exit the race, has never garnered more than single-digit support.
Republican State Sen. Tom McClintock, also a Republican, registered at 13 percent, while Arnold Schwarzenegger leads among Republicans, but trails Democratic frontrunner Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante.
The election is set for Tuesday, Oct. 7. If Davis is recalled, voters will select the next governor among more than 100 names on the ballot.
