Hawaii Workers' Comp Claims Declining

State of Hawaii officials say the number of workers' compensation claims filed in the state is on the decline.

Preliminary figures show 2004 saw 2,347 fewer workers' comp claims filed than in 2003, a drop of 8.2 percent.

In 2003, there were 1,089 fewer claims filed than in 2002, for a reduction of 3.7 percent.

The 2003 decline contributed to an 18.2 percent decease in workers' comp insurance loss costs. They are a significant component of premiums and represent the amounts paid for claims by insurers.

The 2003 data filed with the National Council on Compensation Insurance will affect workers' comp premiums beginning Jan. 1.
