M.E. James Surplus Lines Names Chang Underwriter

M.E. James Surplus Lines Insurance Brokerage Inc. has hired Scott Chang as an underwriter in the new Los Angeles-based office.

Chang began his insurance career in 1989 at Singer Insurance, an managing general agent in Beverly Hills, Calif., while attending college. He started out as an assistant to commercial property and casualty underwriters. His department specialized in contractors insurance.

In 1991, Chang felt a calling and joined the U. S. Air Force. Because he was in law enforcement in the service, he decided to try out for the LAPD in 1994. While waiting to start the police academy, Chang was offered a job by Rick Singer, owner of Bruin Insurance Services Inc. and wanted to expand into commercial lines. Chang accepted the challenge and built the agency’s commercial lines business into a very profitable book. His success in the insurance business convinced him to stay in the industry eventually leaving the law enforcement field behind. He ventured out on his own in 1998 with own agency. Wide Range Insurance Agency specialized in pest control operators and contractors and in 2001 joined London American General Agency Inc.
