Calif. Commissioner To Host Town Hall Meeting for Angora Fire Victims

California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner will be hosting a town hall meeting with residents, insurers and local officials in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., this evening, to assess the needs and concerns of victims of the Angora Fire.

In June, the Angora Fire swept through South Lake Tahoe, destroying 250 homes and leaving more than $150 million in damages in its wake. In the weeks and months following the blaze, residents have been working to settle their insurance claims quickly so they can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Since the Angora Fire broke out, the Department of Insurance has reported receiving 12 complaints from consumers relating to the blaze. The DOI has been working as a liaison between consumers and insurers to develop fair resolutions quickly. Commissioner Poizner is inviting representatives from insurance companies to the meeting to ensure that victims have necessary access to their insurance companies throughout the recovery process.

Following the Angora Fire, Commissioner Poizner has collaborated with the State Fire Marshal and Lake Tahoe law enforcement to assess damages and help victims recover. He also ordered his Department to actively investigate and apprehend any scam artists attempting to swindle vulnerable residents. Last month, CDI investigators arrested five unlicensed contractors preying on victims of the Angora Fire.
