S. Martinelli & Co. Tries to Salvage Merchandise in Calif. Fire

April 22, 2011

A warehouse fire that began April 20 in Watsonville, Calif., continues to burn, according to fire officials. Meanwhile, one of the clients, S. Martinelli & Co., the maker of Martinelli’s apple juices and ciders, has been trying to remove its merchandise, worth $4 million to $5 million, according to local news reports.

Officials say the fire at Apple Growers Ice and Cold Storage Co., has been difficult to fight because of the potential dangers in the warehouse. A tanker has been offloading ammonia that was kept outside of the warehouse. To date, no injuries have been reported, and homes are not threatened. But fire officials are warning neighbors with respiratory problems to remain indoors because of the smoke.
