The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) Western Division has awarded $52,415 in community grants to 10 non-profit organizations. These awards mark the second round of grant funding for 2011 and increase the IICF Western Division’s yearly grant contributions to $232,915, touching 36 separate non-profit organizations in California.
“At its heart, insurance is a business focused on community. We are an industry dedicated to helping those in times of need. Therefore, it is fitting that together, as a united industry, we continue this tradition of community commitment by supporting local nonprofits that address the specific needs of our communities,” said Mark El-Tawil, regional CEO, West Region, Humana and 2010-2011 IICF Grants Committee Chair.
The IICF invests funds back into the areas in which funds were initially raised. The Western Division focuses grant making in four areas: Child Abuse Prevention, Education & Awareness; Disaster Preparedness & Response; Education & Literacy; and Health & Human Services.
Through the second round of Western Division grants, the IICF is supporting the following agencies:
- Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency
- CALICO
- Camp Stevens
- Holy Cross Medical Clinic
- Kids First, Orange County
- North Bay Children’s Center
- Grossmont College
- The Salvation Army of Fresno
- The ARC of Alameda County
- The Red Cross of Northeastern California
Charles McCaul, emergency services manager, American Red Cross of Northeastern California, said that as a direct result of the IICF grant, the Red Cross is able to provide a much needed Disaster Response Trailer filled with 100 cots, blankets, personal hygiene kits, shelter kit and special needs cots.
“This new Disaster Response Trailer enables the Red Cross to quickly mobilize vital supplies when a community disaster strikes,” he said.
The IICF seeks to combine the collective strengths of the insurance industry to provide grants, volunteer service and leadership. Initially founded in California in 1998, it has grown to serve the Western United States, the New York-Northeast region and the Midwest. To date, the IICF has contributed more than $17 million and 140,000 volunteer service hours to hundreds of community nonprofits.
