I don’t understand why we don’t just adequately fund NASA. How is this not a no-brainer?

We somehow have the funding to keep fighting Afghanistan–by far the longest war in US history–in addition to our wars in Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Libya, and God only knows where else the US taxpayer still doesn’t even know about. We can fund a star wars missile shield and budget trillions of dollars for jets that we apparently don’t really need. We’ve spent seven trillion dollars building and maintaining a fleet of aircraft carriers (really). We have the funding to build a multi-billion dollar spy center in Utah big enough to capture and store the entirety of world communications. We have the funding to continue waging a fifty-year war on drugs that, by all accounts and from all perspectives, cannot be described as anything but a complete and utter failure, so much so that the Mexican conflict now ranks as the most violent war in the world with over 50,000 having lost their lives.

But yeah, cut NASA, gay marriage, who won American Idol, and oh did you see Mark Zuckerburg got married?? ZOMG and Kim Kardashian!!! LOLZORS!!!

NASA’s future goal is to pursue deep space exploration. In order to accomplish this task, it needs to privitized low earth orbit transportation and focused on deep space exploration. The reduction in labor is a direct result of retiring the shuttle.

The budget was not cut, only remains the same. W/o an increase in funding, it can not pursue deep space exploration while maintaining the taxi system.

Tam: I am confused… Above you said that “In order to accomplish this task, it needs to be privitized.” ???? That does not make any sence to me. Just because NASA wants to move into deep space exploration…. Its not a zero sum game. We, as Americans and as Earthlings, should be willing to fund NASA and all of its projects. Even the secret ones like the Stargate Program.

NASA report says that internal development of Falcon9/Dragon would cost NASA between 3 and 10 more then price they justified SpaceX spent.
So there is way to use limited resource more efficiently
          This is all there is

Someone needs to fix the headline. SpaceX is insured for maximum probable loss, not maximum possible loss. (It is correctly stated in the article.)

Why the Insurance Journal considers that fact to be news is puzzling, however. The same thing is true for every commercial US launch.

unfortunately, scotty did not get a beaming into the stars, and probably the rest of the earth did not realize he’s been sent to provide miracles elsewhere… according to JAMES T KIRK, he is a miracle worker…

privatising moves the money out of federally funded program and allows that money now to be used for continuing space exploration. i thought many of these so-called projects were spending money just to get sent into space through the shuttle program. now we have to spend our money to russia and japan for sending our astronauts into space. we should have kept that option in-hand.

i would like to eventually see a moon station for research and eventually a man mission to mars! who knows, can we get impulse power and inspect the rest of our galaxy? can we go boldy where no man has gone before?

well, good news! no loss, the space station retrieved it and they now have their first supplies from the private sector!
