Employees at First Insurance Company of Hawaii Ltd. (FICOH) swapped their annual holiday party for a community service event on Dec. 3, partnering with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii (SCH) to remove marine debris and trash at three beaches on Oahu. The sites included Kailua Beach, Ala Moana Beach and Oneula Beach Park in Ewa Beach, better known as “Hau Bush” in Oahu, Hawaii.
At the start of the event at Ala Moana Beach, FICOH surprised SCH with a donation of $3,000 as part of its commitment to the environment and sustainability of Hawaii’s coastlines.
SCH provided supplies and logistical support at the three beach cleanup locations. FICOH associates provided the volunteer manpower. Together, FICOH’s 189 volunteers removed a total of 1,650 pounds of debris from the coastline. A majority of the debris, 1,546 pounds, was categorized as land-based, meaning it is likely from Oahu. The remaining 104 pounds included mesoplastic and microplastic, or small fragmented pieces of plastic that washed up on the coastline.
