what is the exact legal “number’/ specification of this ‘garage keepers act”, so it can be looked up? Are repair shop and garages required by law to have this insurance? If they don’t have it, what is the consequence?
A friend had a car held hostage at a shop that kept charging while supposedly repairing the motor, had the car w/o knowledge of the owner at an unrelated location that didn’t belong to them where it was damaged, ripped, torn, dented, scratched, crushed interior and exterior, estimates exceed 40k. Car had to be bonded out.Shop owners are uncooperative. What laws and rules were broken and who has to pay for that?
If my vehicle is left in repair shop for repairs overnight and another customer vehicle damages my vehicle ny backing into it is the repair shop legally responsible for repairs since they were negligent in storing my vehicle once repairs were complete? Their service people failed to communicate with the porter in regards to storing my vehicle and the driver of the vehicle that hit my car does not have insurance and since I was not present during the accident and only have very limited information about the driver and vehicle involved I cannot make a claim against the driver because the repair shop failed to collect proper info. Any help would be appreciate in this matter. The repair shop refuses to make a claim with their insurance.
Does/should garage or garage keepers liability cover damage to the customer’s or others’ vehicles if an employee of the garage is driving the customer’s vehicle for pick up or delivery? Thanks
Had car in for transmission work. Car was at local transmission shop. Front windshield was cracked when I picked it up. Even the man who test drove it said it was not cracked the day before. Owner got pissy about accusations that it happened while at his shop. Some cars are parked outside.
I have GKLL, but am hiring a valet service to operate from my garage. the vendor of valet services will provide insurance; however, how will any of their actions impact my GKLL?
I have a Building a guy wants to rent to do car brokerage..Buy,sell and store classic cars. How can I best cover myself, and he be covered as well..?? What would you make him have if it were You..?? Thanks
The airbags on the driver and passenger doors deployed on the technician at a garage. They want me to file an insurance claim for $5500, but I think it is their fault. Thinking of getting a lawyer, but what kind of lawyer? They want to settle with me and have lowered the amount of the bill but still at $1800.
The garage owner was taking the vehicle for testing when a lady hit him in the back. Her insurance is paying for damages to the car. Isn’t the garage liable for taking the vehicle out during high volume traffics at the worst intercession while sleeting and snow. Now, he wants payment before the car is allowed to be towed. Shouldn’t his insurance be responsible for a bill for repairs that may or may not have occurred. They mad at us for wrecking our. Vehicle
yes they are,period!
reasonable precaustion MUST be made. Check with a Ferrari deal that is why they will use a test track policy. They rent /use parking lots. Vehicles get trailed for certain work.
It appears that both Garage Liability and Garagekeeper’s Insurance would be the best option for a mobile detailing business. Any suggestion on coverage levels (deductible)? I assume that starting off small and working my way up is the most advisable route.
What if the Insured is contracted with one company to mover the vehicles from one place or another, and the vehicle used to tow/move it breaksdown, and the party they are contracted with tells them they need to ‘drive’ said vehicle back to a main location and an accident happens. who is liable at that point, and would it be garagekeepers?
If my vehicle was broken into and vandalized in Oklahoma and personal items stolen, is the service garage liable for repairs and/or stolen property? They are saying they are not responsible for any of it.
I am an agent in Florida, if your vehicle was left there for repairs and was vandalized on their property and in their care, yes their garage keepers insurance should cover in damages to your vehicle. At least in Florida this is how it works I would think Oklahoma would be the same.
Every state is different. Generally speaking, if the shop followed protocol and secured your vehicle properly – they do not owe for the loss. Your coverage would applly
We took our RV to a service garage to have the dash AC fixed. While in their care, on their lot and with possession of our keys, someone ran into the RV with a box truck. The guy that did this only had up to $10,000 of insurance on his policy. The estimate came back in over $21,000. My insurance company is telling me that they won’t go after the garage because it wasn’t their fault and they will pay the rest of the claim. Is that true or should they try to recoup from the garage instead of using my insurance and making my rates go up?
The garage does not owe the loss and should not pay. You should have your carrier pay. They can then pursue the underinsured person, if they choose to do so.
When you leave your vehicle in someones care for repair or service they have the obligation of keeping it safe. If something happens that causes damage they are responsible for the repair. What is not paid by the driver of the truck is the responsibility of the garage owner and it would be up to his insurance or him to go after the person doing the damage. Different states may have different outlooks on the matter, but as long as they have not turned over the vehicle to you, it is their problem. At least in my state, it is.
Auto repair shop employee took dominion and possession of my car to drive into garage bay in order
to change my inspection sticker since car passed inspection. I watched as he backed my car, stopped, then accelerated in reverse into the shop’s multi metal clad, mobile display of 25-30 tires, displacing it some
into adjacent sidewalk. at do have extra scratches and scuffs on my plastic bumper, trunk/doors have a secondary rattle sound at shutting, and the left side of bumper need back tire is sticking out some. Owner turns was on vacation, is irate and hostile, and disputes my damages. He will not release his commercial
liability carrier name/garagekeeper policy. My insurance cannot purse subrogation unless they pay out on a claim with a $500 deductible. Is there a way to obtain that information? The employee technician is 100% at fault.
This article was VERY helpful in clarifying Garage and Garage Keepers coverage’s!

Does garage keepers cover a mechanic if he damages an engine due to work performed on it?
Rob, Garage keepers excludes faulty work performed by you. However, though rare and expensive coverage can be endorsed for this exclusion.

Your renter needs a “used car dealer package.” You’ll want to be listed as additional insured.
