If safety is the real issue, let\’s make sure yellow lights correspond to speed limits and light timing is adequately synchronized. Unless you honestly believe that there are millions of drivers out there just waiting to casually drive through stale red lights, these sensible measures would eliminate the \”need\” for red light cameras, or at least make them cost-ineffective.

Aside from the numerous legal problems with photo enforcement (why do you think these are civil citations and not criminal?), I\’d like to see a study that 1) is done by someone other than the camera manufacturers or the municipalities making millions from them, and 2) addresses the marked increase in fender benders at camera intersections.

As for Gallup\’s poll, 1) what exactly was the question, 2) who cares what the populace thinks if they\’re wrong, and 3) if 75% of the public thinks that red light cameras are good, explain Virginia dropping them like a hot potato. Sounds like the electorate has spoken.

I\’m sorry Rob but I have to disagree. I live in Florida and the red light runners abound. You take your life in your hands if you do not enter an intersection with great caution even if you have the green light. It the cameras save one life, then they are worth it. When I have come up on an intersection that I knew had a camera, I would slow down and anticipate that it might turn red and give myself time to stop if it did turn. Traveled a route with cameras for years and never had a problem stopping. The red light runners need to be stopped. (pardon the pun)
