Not only that, but I am leading the fight in my state to mandate effective mufflers on motorcycles, so that scooter trash don\’t wake me up at 5AM everyday.

Those loud pipes the \”scooter trash\” are sporting save lives. Sorry it wakes you up at 5am, but the noise alerts inattentive motorists to the presence of a motorcycle.

Oh, so if I took the muffler off my car no bikers will run into me? Are BMW bikes involved in more accidents than hogs are because they have mufflers? Please.

Sorry, but there\’s no one else on the road at 5AM for those loud pipes to alert. They have even set off car alarms! Put some strobe lights on your forks or something, but \”loud pipes\” are going, going, gone.

It is indded too bad Harley get awakened at 5:00am, but Harley probably doesn\’t ride, either. It\’s the yahoos in those BMW\’s that don\’t pay attention unless there is something noiser that their stereos turned up to 20. It appears that there is only ONE bike that wakes him and maybe, just maybe, those pipes are a bit loud.

Yo, get a frkn horn to toot while riding down the road WHEN THERE ARE OTHER VEHICLES AROUND. If what you are doing is too dangerous to do without waking up the neighborhood, THEN YOU CAN\’T DO IT.

ALL bikes will have nice quiet mufflers on them in my state before I\’m done.

Now it is obvious that you don\’t ride! You would be even more miffed about the horns beeping at 5 than a loud pipe. Ever try to ride while beeping a horn on your handlebars? Better keep to a bicycle on the bike path….oh, wait, those yahoos think they own that too! Apparently it\’s not TOO dangerous \’cause they CAN do it! Keep campaigning, we need some more humor here.

HAS EVERYONE GONE STUPID? IT WAS PRIME IDIOCY TO EVER PASS THIS DUMB \”LAW\”. WHAT MAKES THE \” DUH, I GOT A CHOICE\” CROWD THINK THEIR SKULL IS ANY LESS SUBJECT TO INJURY WHEN STRIKING THE ROAD THAN SOMEONE UNDER AGE 21 ? ! HEL-L-L-O-O ??? AND ONE LAST ITEM; MONEY. YES, MONEY BECAUSE WHEN ONE OF THESE \”FREE-AIR-THRU-MY HAIR\” PEOPLE
NEEDS SURGERY, LIFE SUPPORT, POST-OP, OR A TRANSPLANT FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT, WHO\’S GONNA PAY FOR THAT IF THAT \”SKILLED\” RIDER DOESN\’T HAVE MEDICAL INSURANCE ? GUESS WHO, AND I DON\’T WANT TO PAY FOR IT !!
IF THIS BUNCH CAN\’T WEAR A HELMUT TO PROTECT ALL OF US THEN A STRONG, ENFORCED LAW WITH HIGH FINES AND SEVER PENALTIES NEEDS TO BE PASSED TO PROTECT THE REST OF THE POPULACE FROM THIER MISTAKES

If you insist on sleeping in undisturbed, please be sure to outlaw the amplifiers and sub-woofers in autos too. I wouldn\’t want you to be inconvenienced by having to pass a law against those later.

Is anything else aggravating you that perhaps can be solved by mandating your will upon us?

Thank you – we all appreciate it.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience, Harley.

If you live in an urban or suburban area, where other people also live, there\’s going to be noise.

I do feel your pain, that\’s a fact. My neighbor leaves for work obscenely early in the morning. He drives a Firebird with a set of glass-packs that could wake the dead. Like you, it annoys me.

But I accept the fact that where there are neighbors, there is noise.

Seems to me the people who do wear helmets are protecting themselves to a greater degree. So much for empty spaces. Where\’s your helmet? As for mufflers for all, how about the guy with the Firebird…or anything else you find objectionable?

Ironic that the guy with the Firebird HAS mufflers. They just happen to be of the obnoxiously loud variety.

    To each their own.

Better some good old rough neck glass-packs than one of those buzz-bomb-angry-bee-in-a-coffee-can mufflers that the tuner kids seem to favor.

That\’s an idea though. If Harley sleeps in a helmet, maybe it will block the noise from his \”scooter trash\” pal.

But FYI Harley, if you submit mandatory muffler legislation to your local government, you might want to add a caveat that bans mufflers which produce offensive noise, because a lot of them do. Just because it\’s called a \”muffler\” doesn\’t mean it\’s quiet.

It ain\’t stereos that are putting out 100db noise, it\’s overgrown juveniles compensating for their feelings of inadequacy that want to sound like 2%ers at 5AM. What is so hard to grasp about that? I\’m not the one imposing his will on others, I am trying to stop others from deciding when I wake up. If my car sounded like these hogs I\’d get a ticket.

    Harley,

The towns of CareFree and Cave Creek Arizona have noise ordinance laws and occasionally you see a Sheriff\’s car with a Microphone on the side of the road. While my Harley has unmodified Vance & Hines pipes, they\’re still under the limits. The people that drill out the baffles are inconsiderate and should be fined. So are the kids with the soup can mufflers and sub-woofers. But even though I\’m legal you probably still wouldn\’t like my bike.

Thank Jebus AZ doesn\’t have a helmet law!

I still think you\’re imposing your will by legislating my safety. Freedom should include a healthy dose of choice and that choice should include risky behaviors.

I know Chuck Umbenhauer and can tell you that he knows how to ride safely….why should he wear a helmet? Who is this law going to protect but that segement of the population who need to be told not to do lots of things, like putting their fingers into an electric socket? Choice is a good thing as far as I\’m concerned; and those who make a bad choice should bear the burden of their decision. What costs have gone up? Let\’s see the data!

EVERY weekday at 5AM on the road in fron of my house, some kid winds his bike up for a quarter mile and then sings over the hill for the next mile and a half; he sure enjoys himself but it doesn\’t wake me up since I am already drinking my coffee; my wife is waiting for the sound of him taking himself out of the gene pool one of these morning but I do sympathize because it really is bothersome, if you are sleeping. Now a Harley has a low drone and not only that, the guys riding the Harleys are not trying to break the world land speed record on the road out front…..need I say more?

Here is my 2 cents: One: I sympathize with you; I think those kids with the loud mufflers and sub-woofers ought to be fined for damaging your quality of life. Two, I think if someone wants to go helmetless, let them. Let\’s just make sure that if they are uninsured, that they get only the minimal life-saving measures, no heroic, costly medical procedures and certainly no assisted living care, since they neglected to protect themselves in the first place. I no longer ride so this is not my problem. IfI don\’t play the game, why should I make the rules?

It ain\’t humans that bother me, at least not all humans: it\’s un-mufflered motors. No one can tell me why cars need mufflers but not hogs. If cars must have mufflers and horns, why not bikes? And if loud pipes constitute your safety program, then let\’s take the mufflers off of cars to, to make them more safe. Or let\’s ban bikes between the hours of 7AM and 9PM so we can enjoy quite repose in our homes.

Did I miss an ammendment to the constitution or something where it was the government\’s job to protect all us silly little sheep from ourselves? Helmet laws are silly, seat belt laws are even more silly. If the state was actually serious about reducing the motorcycle fatality rate, they\’d station police around bars and get all the drunk bikers off the road. And Harley, please get off your high horse and quit trying to tell everyone else they are wrong for not liking the same thing you do. If you want a quiet bike, then buy one. I prefer mine loud. It\’s not hurting anyone, or anything, so what\’s the big deal? When a motorcycle goes past you, how long does the noise bother you??? 20 seconds? I\’ve worked on unbaffled harleys for years, and I\’ve never heard one half as loud as a triaxle truck…. guess we should remove all of them from the road too huh? The only thing that I see that needs a muffler is your mouth if your going to continue to say silly crap like that.
