OK, let the games begin and before to bleeding hearts start, there is nothing racist in these remarks. They’re simply factual. In addition, I have no tolerance for sexual “harassment”. But let’s consider the facts.

We have an aggressive black female making $250K per year in a high visibility position with a nationally known organization who is offended by an aggressive black male using a comparatively harmless term that she must have heard before. You don’t climb the corporate ladder and suddenly take offense at something like that. She was successful and certainly had enough self-esteem to tell him to shut up and go away. Blacks enjoy using colorful language without any concern in their routine chat and in their music. Suddenly, it becomes offensive. Why now?Talk about a double standard. Why didn’t she file a complaint with the EEOC? If her suit wasn’t about money, will she donate her windfall profits to one of the many organizations that could put it to good use. Yeah right.

Let’s remember who was involved with this: Isiah Thomas, the guy who killed the CBA & has run the Knicks into the basement and strapped them for years with bad contracts. He’s not exactly a paragon of virtue. This should never have gotten to court in the first place – did you hear his testimony? Thomas came across as a caveman in a suit.
Bad all around – greedy plaintiff, stupid defendant, bad team, racially charged issue. Plaintiff wins. Hopefully the end of the mess.

She can keep up with the boys – you know, until she can’t.

I worked in a large bldg in DC twenty+ years ago with the HVAC crew, and a female electrician got hired. At the end of her first day she walked unannounced into the locker room while we were changing, as if there should be no notice of her sex, or as if we could do the same in the women’s locker room.

The same goes for pro sports – a 22 yr old female can interview naked jocks in the locker room. Could we turn those tables? Not a chance. It’s all make believe, folks, it’s a pretend world that the liberals live in and for some reason they aren’t happy unless we pretend along with them.

One former boss cheerily called out “It’s a man’s world” as I left a few minutes early for an Insurance Women’s dinner.

A few days on one job, I was treated to hair curlingly racist sexist filthy not funny jokes at a business dinner. I was the only woman there and they really let them rip.
One office hosted a stripper for a principal’s birthday entertainment – stripper who took it all off, right in front of a window.
One guy at another office left a pair of sexy underwear on the desk of a female worker.
There was even a branch manager who escorted across state lines to our Christmas party a 15 year old female part time clerical person,
and the kid went home drunk.

I could go on an on.

My husband could not believe some of the stuff that went on. He said he thought that stuff went out with the horse and buggy.

Similar stuff and more I have seen with no women present. It’s the way guys act. I don’t condone it, I ignore it when I need to. If you complain you get ostracized. So as with many things in life, choose your battles, and when you lose don’t cry.

Women who want to be treated equal betray their true desire when they suddenly want special treatment based on sex. There’s no way around the logic of that statement.

The whole thing starts very young: “Mommy, tell Billy and Joey to let me play too! Waaaaaaah!!!”

Since Black’s “colorful language” is considered an entree by the majority to say whatever then I guess all Blacks can call White people “rednecks” or go the way of George Jefferson and use the “H” word which has not been used on network TV on a regular basis since then (except on cable when Dave Chappelle had a show).

Every race has racial epithets they want to use amongst themselves – every race has a level of comfort with using certain racial slurs but with Black people it’s considered a double standard. That’s typical white-speak for “I wish I could sling the “N” word around like they do but I’d get slapped wih a big fat lawsuit.” The thing is you don’t have to say it verbally. On these postings you type it subjectively and in the workplace you think it. For the man that said he remembered when harass was two words – what does that tell you? He thinks of women as objects of sexual desire but he can’t exactly throw it out there verbally or else he’ll end up like Isaiah Thomas.

(Also, when I throw out so-called racial comments it’s when others like to abuse free speech and type exactly what they feel on the Insurance Journal. So getting ganged up on is not fearful for me. I like telling it how it is and if you don’t like it then let the mud-slinging begin. As a young person I do not care and I love being an American being I am entitled by birth to free speech. Also, I come from a long line of americans that have fought for this country and then had to come back home to racism and fight a whole other war).

Oh and I loooooooove the preface of “oh I’m not trying to be racist defense” and “don’t take this the wrong way”. That sends a red flag. This is about harassment plain and simple. So what if she was a black woman and you put “aggressive”. You have to be in any career if you want to get anywhere and being aggressive is not indigenous to one race or one sex. What you’re really trying to say is that since she’s Black and making that much money which in your pea brain you think does not happen often for Black people of either sex is that she and others should have to put up with their environment. Everyone has a breaking point and if she wanted to reach the level of $500K, she wasn’t going to get there with the hostile environment she was working in. No women of ANY race should have to put up with harassment and if there are deep pockets then go girl and get your paper (colorful comment here). You can’t exactly sue the garbageman and hope to get any money or your fellow teacher personally but you can sue the school system for hiring him so what’s the difference?

Should she donate to charity or women’s causes? Only if she wants to. She has THREE kids. Since she won so much then she and all other women (Merill Lynch, etc) should all donate – not just her. Some people just do not like to see that much money going to one person. Let’s be honest here.

I have no idea why blacks ever used that term and it mystifies me why it continues in your community. but that’s not something I want to debate here. What I want to say is that this lawsuit will be paid for by someone other than the knicks and Isaiah but we aren’t talking about getting justice here, we’re talking about someone getting PAID! when I was an intern, my boss, the top lawyer in the office, said that in legal matters, the last thing that really matter is TRUTH and JUSTICE. the system is about retribution and revenge…getting even, not setting the record straight. This was bad publicity for all involved but c’est la vie, c’est le guerre

It’s not just a black experience but there are other people of other races that use racially insensitve words too (i.e. The Redneck Comedy Tour). Alot of white people would get offended if I called them that and I could say –“well you use it”. If you do not use it personally, that’s your call dude.

Yes, the insurance company will pony up (D & O, etc.) but hey – when you hire the wrong people and testosterone gets a little heavy and some men act like the pack of wolves they are then anything is bound to happen. Sometimes you have to hit people in the wallets and if Isaiah refused to admit any wrongdoing then hey someone was going to pay. Do people have to lose limbs in order for people not to say they’re looking for a hand-out? PLEASE! If you sue a corporation, sue the Klan, sue the school system – yes there are others that have to pay along with the defendants. Tough titty!

Dear A Pride: The point here is that the plaintiff is a bigot. She’s obviously a well-compensated person at $250,000 a year. She said is wasn’t about money and she did it for a “higher cause”. Get real. Somebody mentioned injunctive relief. Taking action to correct behavior is one thing. Awarding millions is something quite different. How much real “suffering” can an aggressive female claim over being called a you know what? It’s not like MSG or Thomas are paying anything out of their own pockets. Their insurance carriers are. The plaintiff need to put her newly found money where her mouth is. Donate it to help womens causes. Of course we both know that will never happen.

An what’s with the remark about suing the Klan? Do you see anyone suing the NAACP, or Sharpton? And by the way, even if you called whites by some offensive name, they wouldn’t go running to the courts looking to make a quick buck. Some people love to milk the system.

The reality is sports organizations are in a very competitive busines to win and make money……..not make nice with prima donna employees………male or female. Anyone who wants to play in the big leagues takes what comes with the turf. Otherwise, they should stay on the porch or chase their ideals in a less threatening environment. Some leopards can’t change their spots. Thomas may be one of them. Society can’t make laws to address the 2% of the population who can’t play nice. I’d like to see the playing field leveled by having a law that prevents women from dressing and provocatively. Then the men could blame their bad behavior on entrapment.

    Melissa,

I will be the first one to admit that if I sued for harassment, the first place I would be is at Macy’s. That’s on her if she will or won’t donate to women’s causes. I bet alot of women that win these types of lawsuits don’t. That’s just human nature – self preservation or whatever. There are alot of us in the insurance arena or in corporate American period that do not volunteer to help low income, battered and abused women. That does not make us any worse than the next person but we do regard these people with compassion (hopefully).

For the guys that may want to sue women for dressing provocatively – good luck with that one. Some people do not have good home training – male or female. Some people like attention because they’re not getting it at home – I work with plenty of women who unfornately practise this. That’s why I sometime hate casual Friday – it’s not supposed to be wear your best “club clothes day”. Like ZZ Top said something to this effect, “Girls go crazy for a sharp dressed man.” I personally LOVE a man in a well cut suit – so are all men going to go with shirt and tie so as not to turn me on? I think not. I appreciate the eye candy. My husband’s Native American. I really wish he would wear his Red Earth gear all the time but that would turn too many people on. Oh well…

In regards to the statement about suing the Klan – this is just an example. I heard today that Imus not only got his $20 million settlement but will probably be on air by next year. You can’t change everyone and apparently none of his comments offend everyone except Blacks women (though there should have been more women’s groups that spoke out, I felt the team was left to fend for itself). No amount of money will change people’s hearts be they racist, sexist, etc. Everyone is guilty of at one time or another believing certaim stereotypes and painting a whole race for it. Hopefully the more you work around other races the more you’ll see some things are true and others are embellished or have no basis in truth at all.

For me personally I am not a member of any women’s organization including my own sorority. I am ME, PHI, ME and I fight my own battles. I don’t expect the NAACP, National Council of Negro Women or even the EEOC to fight my battles and therefore I don’t have to give any money to them after a big fat lawsuit. If I need to sue, I will hire a great attorney regardless of race or sex believe it or not. I can help in other ways which I have for low-income women and their kids. Face to face giving is more important than giving to an organization – I know where my money is going when I give it to the person in need.

No, whites may not sue for being called a racial epithet but as in the case of Bakke vs (I can’t remember – it was before my time), this case dealt with reverse discrimation. You can say Blacks are more sensitive than most people but I dare say so are alot of minorities and who do people care so much about Sharpton? I have been accused to a certain extent of race-baiting and so has this man. Like he said, if people say something about other races then it’s a hate crime but say something about Blacks, it’s free speech. It’s no longer the 60s and it’s no longer open season on attacking people of color. There may not be signs out but there are code words and a system where the playing field is not equal for everyone.

Back to old girl, she’ll be laughing all the way to the bank while we’re here debating.

The difference between calling whites “rednecks” & using the “N” word is that redneck slur of a segment of caucasions, where the “N” word is a slur for an entire race.

The truth of the matter is that I don’t know of a comparable word for whites that they use amongst themselves compared to use of the “N” word within the hip/hop-rap generation of African Americans.

You don’t hear “Hey Redneck, what’s up?”, although the hip/hop-rap generation of whites have been heard to call each other “Homie”.

um, over 10 states have medical marijuana laws so i am not breaking the law (maybe federal law) but you break the law everyday when you drive faster than the speed limit, make that right turn on a red, park in a no parking or handicap zone. now i will lower myself to your position and name call, you are a hypocrite. have a great day.
