The deer population is thinned, so the environment wins (deer can damn near deforestate an area quickly); the neighborhood wins; the hunters win; the deer don’t die of starvation; and the meat is donated to those in need – sounds like a good program to me.

I can’t benefit by getting any of that tasty deer meat here in VA. Do they ship?

There are a couple other options availalbe for maintaining a manageable deer population in an area.

    1. introduce a natural deer pedator. Wolves would work…

    2. pave the pathways and allow people to drive on the paths.

Both methods would allow more deer to be taken without firing a shot.

Oh, and I guess you could find someone to run around and try to put condoms on the deers to keep them from breeding…

Wouldn’t it be safer to bowhunt these deer near a populated area?

Guns, Bow hunting, cars used as devices to hit the deer–all very dangerous to everyone. Why not just set up a Kiddie Pool with Jell-O in in and watch the deer finish each other off??

Once they break their hit you have to wait for an infection to set in before they die. That makes the deer jerky taste weird. And it takes too long!

Um not sure that introducing wolves into a populated area would be a great option….in fact I would rather take my chances with the trained hunters!!!!

This is NJ people. The most effective way to kill things is to hire Tony Soprano and his boys. They always get their target and there isn’t any collateral damage. People have less chance getting shot by a professional sharpshooter than they do walking down the street.

I agree but I think the animal rights people should be forced to practice what they preach..and I quote…

“Animal rights activists call the culling barbaric, and say officials should explore other methods such as contraception to control the animals’ numbers. Authorities used to trap the deer and then move them out of the preserve, DiVincenzo said, but many deer would die in transit and fewer places wanted to take the animals.”

On the other hand they could breed in the piney woods and then we would have far too many animal rights kooks..But on the other hand there are skilled snipers already in the woods…..hmmmmmmmmm

Where else but NJ would the State pay for 20 people to do what individuals would do for free that have already bought hunting licenses? I’m surprised they are not giving out deer birth control shots like they tried elsewhere.

They should just feed them and have them as pets – You could easily fence them in. While filming the Sopranos we never had any problems.

As to bow hunting… it really wouldn’t be safer. A good sharp shooter can hit a deer and that deer will travle maybe 50 yards. I bow hunt and it is not unusual for the deer to go upto 100 yards before falling. The danger of course is that once the deer is hit, it is likely to do anything if it runs into a person or traffic.

“The 10-day hunt will take place each Tuesday and Thursday through Feb. 28…”

So, am I to presume there’s a time warp enveloping the state? No wonder folks never have nice things to say about this place! LOL!!

If I’m reading the article correctly…the hunt began on Tuesday of this week. If the article was written today… That means 2 days occurred this week – and will continue for an additional eight days next month…

Yes…That’s right – that would mean:
    Tuesday Feb 5, 12, 18 and 26th and Thursday Feb 7, 14, 21 and 28th…

I’m not sure exactly what was wharped

You don’t like wolves? How about mountain lions? They’d do the job, and I’m not joking. Without predators prey takes over. Ok, so we lose a few folks along the way maybe, but since this area is so highly populated it’s probably not a bad idea either. Survival of the fittest works for everybody!

The article mentions that NJ is the country’s most crowded state. Maybe it’s not that there are too many deer, just too many people. Maybe we could get the sharpshooters to change their targets.

Ah, a cleansing of the gene pool?

That might work and just think of the extra room for the deer. Maybe we could even introduce wolves to keep both the human and deer population in check.

Being a hunter and living in NH we fortunatly do not have this problem but I do understand the reasons for the hunt. As mentioned in the article over population of a deer heard can be harmful to the deer for many reasons. They only way to control this is by thinning out the heard. One suggestion for the people that disagree is to have these people injected with lyme dieases and starve them, then see how they feel.
