It’s nuts to drive on New Years Eve these days. I’m perfectly happy with watching the ball drop at 9:00, my time, and hitting the sack at 10:00. I’m happy to wake in the morning all in one piece. Too many amatuers are out drinking and driving crazy.

I was in Times Square this year watching the ball drop (and listening to Cee Lo butcher John Lennon’s “Imagine”). I took the subway there and took it home. Public transportation is the best alternative.

I don’t know about other cities, but both Boston & St. Louis host “First Night” each New Years Eve. It’s a non-alcoholic, cultural event which is held both inside and outside. You pay a low fee for a button to wear which gets you into a variety of theater performances, concerts and misc. It’s for the whole family, all ages, and it’s a fantastic way to ring in the new year. More cities should adopt this type of event.

First Night sounds like a great event for families who aren’t drinking. But they aren’t the problem. They need to invent an event for the drinkers that keeps them off the roads.
