As any fan of The Great Santini knows, when in doubt, place yourself in peril to avoid crashing into a residential neighborhood. Everyine was incredibly lucky.
This is exactly what the pilots appear to have done here. Eyewitnesses recounted the plane orienting nose up and dumping its fuel load. Notice that one of the pilots was still in his seat suggesting they waited until the last possible moment to eject– if they had been at higher altitude the seat would have detached. I also read elsewhere that the pilots waited to eject to keep the plane from crashing into a school.
i work nearby this incident and have been in the military. this was definately a blessing that the incident happened on good friday. most of the tenants were out of the buildings.

IUnderstand the site was in APZ II. Why was an apartment house allowed to be placed in the APZ. Who approved the site (NAS)
