This sounds like an episode of Matlock or something. Unreal! Also, did you notice how the attorney gets more money than the guy that was shot. Unreal!

Libby, Libby, Libby, my dear: please tell me you’re NOT surprised the attorney gets more than the victim! :)

Scott, I too am not surprised. Even the smallest claim resolves with more the attorney than the plaintiff. When I asked how that could be acceptable, I was told that the attorney gets money for his professional time and effort and he gets money for the expense of putting together your case, such as paying his clerk, the adminstrative assistant and all that goes with running a law office. I guess that means you pay for his expenses and you pay for his salary and profit added on top.

Except it depends on the venue, as well.

Some states will cap what an attorney can actually charge (if the insured does the legwork to prove the case.)

Ultimately, it depends on who you hire as an attorney. If you hire a shyster, expect to get played.

Also–workers comp was paid almost a million dollars–all of which was earmarked for the victim’s treatment, lost wages, and disability. That has to be factored in as well. So at briefest glance, it looks like the attorney played the insured, but that’s not truly accurate.

The article says that a juvenile and another man who brought the bullets got probation? So they let someone else load the weapons being used to do the shooting? I guess I am a bit dumbfounded by both of these. Probation for actually bringing the live ammunition that permanently paralyzed someone seems very lenient to me.
