Amtrak that paragon of management efficiency remains asleep at the switch, unaccountable to no one. Further, their engineers, who take their cues from union reps will never blame themselves. When daily we are told that cars and trucks can be be driverless, why are these preventable disasters still happening on fixed track that should be computer controlled?

Ask Sen. Blount who took almost $300,000 from rail lobbyists about his bill that delayed the implementation of safety devices that could have prevented this.

The engineer in this accident has already lawyered up. He said he doesn’t remember what happened. Oops! Doing 106 MPH in a 50MPH zone on a curve is a bit off on the speed.

I tried an internet search to see how Amtrak is insured, with virtually no success. It would appear that it is probably the U.S. taxpayer that is holding the bag for this event?

When was the last time that Amtrak turned a profit. Our elected officials continue to send boat loads to Amtrak. If this is a private company why is it that we continue to fund this loosing prop. If there is a need for Amtrak those who ride it should pay for it. If the price is to high perhaps those who run it need to be repaced or sell the RR to someone who can run it with a profit. One last thing when will the tax payers get back some of the funds that have been sent to Amtrak for years. Leave it to Chuck Schulmer. He was able to inject himself into the news once again. One of the dead was in the Naval Academy and needed a senator to sponsor him. Chuck ran to the media and once again said look at me.

Sell it to Uncle Warren Buffet. He already owns railroads and turns a profit on them.

just answered my own question by reading a CNN story. there is a $200million cap on any awards (by federal law) and Amtrac apparently “self insures”. since they are fully subsidized by taxpayers, that means you and I will be paying.

Steve, the goofy media has been focusing on a possible rock hitting the windshield of the train. So what, I don’t think that made the train go twice as fast as the limit on a curve. It had absolutely nothing to do with this accident.

Agent – I have not heard the theory that a rock hitting a train windshield caused it to travel 100+ miles per hour prior to the crash.

Do you have any links or details on where you saw that since I couldn’t find it when I googled for it either?
