      Software caused both crashes.

And I am supposed to be comfortable on the roads with self-driving cars? A software developer puts a semi-colon in the wrong place and people die. I am a fan of driver assistance devices (blind spot warning, lane departure warning, etc) but I don’t think I’ll ever trust a self-driving car. Too easy to die in a crash.

I imagine once the self driving car technology becomes more mainstream, it will still be safer than idiot drivers out there. Yes, there will be malfunctions occasionally, but I bet auto accidents will significantly decrease. For those of us who pay attention and are good drivers, it is still something we would prefer to have in our own hands but I’d rather have self driving cars out there vs. teen/20 somethings driving and texting.

        Not until about 2035.

a few years back called local j deere dealer to see how they were coming on my ’65 john deere 4020 repairs — the s manager said he had a $250,000 new tractor that was going in circles and he could not figure out why, and they were about ready to get the factory reps and engineers out there to help figure it out

when the computers (Hal?) run everything we are tied to what they do unless we know the program in and out — look at our insurance policies tied to household driving records — how do you explain those to the insured??????

Boeing and JD both have some of the best engineers and people — yet computers still can be coded wrong or users not instructed on failsafe tactics. So if the pilot goes into a sneezing fit and the co pilot is two seconds from his seat what happens?

2 accidents. 2 problems. 2 third world countries, Ethiopia, India. Maybe 2 language problems? Maybe 2 training problems?

Either way there is no reason for a plane that had such violent potential with an apparently user unfriendly system should be certified. This is one area in which conservative and liberal thought can converge.

They try 2 dozens times to over-ride the MCAS. That’s a system error. Does a Tesla insist on driving itself if I repeatedly try and over-ride the self drive. No! Why does a 737 with hundreds of lives at stake insist on flying itself after the pilot hit the reset button. What? Do you have to know the secret code? What convoluted steps are needed to turn the damn auto-pilot off???

And the MCAS was dependent on a single sensor??? That’s insane!!!
