Why do you beat your wife? (JK). Actually, half of them fail, mostly due to the fact that they cannot use capital like a normal business (what other startup could fund growth when limited to keeping 20% profit?), cannot hire industry experts to its board, and is entering a mature market (mutual insurance is *far* from new)?
Not certain about that being the cause. Reason I say that is the BCBS entity here in AZ recently pulled out of ACA for the two most populous counties as they could no longer afford the losses. They still plan to loose money in the remainder of the state but no one else is willing to play there so in the interest of providing for the public they decided to stay.
Bottom line is this, you cannot provide healthcare at the levels required at the low rates required. It is simple math.
It’s only “such a great idea” for those who receive subsidies to make their health insurance ‘affordable’ at taxpayers’ expense.
Politicians and academicians involved in this colossal federal government failure truly deserve to be sent home and never again be involved in legislation or other political decisions that adversely impact the public… but NOT THEMSELVES!
Well, not exactly… There were plenty of arguments and claims on both sides of the isle about funding and savings that led to the initial (poor) guess. Given that, the first target wasn’t all that bad. It IS fact that the rep refused to fix or adjust anything in the ACA, including funding and subsidy, as has been necessary for every other successful gov’t program in our history. They want to scrap it, so fixing it in the interim would be counter to the politics.
Beez – you said “It IS fact that the rep refused to fix or adjust anything in the ACA, including funding and subsidy, as has been necessary for every other successful gov’t program in our history.”
Every other successful govt program??? Apparently, you have a different definition for success than I do. Just because it’s a handout and is helping some of the people, it does not mean it is a success.
Furthermore, it is a fact that the Democrats passed this mess 100% on their own when they had the majority in the house and senate. They had to lie and bribe other democratics just to get enough votes to pass it. The Repubs had nothing to do with blocking or defunding it. In fact, they threatened to defund it after they gained control but eventually caved and raised the debt ceiling.
@Beez; Republican efforts to fix ACA would simply be vetoed by Obama.
Got any other stupid comments that cannot justify supporting ACA and liberal political philosophy and their accompanying hypocrisy of NOT subjecting themselves to the ACA mandates ( and also exempting many of their supporters in unions that contribute to the DNC) ?
The healthcare system could be fixed if the Users (us patients) had more “skin in the game”. If we had to pay a percentage for everything, we would start to shop around for a better price. If the doc sends you for an MRI, some get “referral fees” for sending them to their guy. However, they may charge more than another MRI center. We never question it; we do what the doc orders. If we shopped these services around, like we do when buying an appliance or auto, we all could lower the cost of health services, thus lowering the cost of insurance.
Forced to go on ObamaCare for nine months due to layoff; $6900 deductible per person. Had to get ultra-sound, pay out of pocket. Local hospital wanted $1700; local medical office down street from hospital charged me $300.
Jack, wouldn’t disagree with any of your comments. However, it’s difficult to shop around for procedures such as major surgery especially when so many doctors & entities (labs, etc) are part of the process (and billing). The surgeon you choose has no clue what the “entire” procedure will cost. Only their fee. Additionally, the doctors have figured this out. In some areas of the country it’s next to impossible to find dermatologists or gastroenterologist taking new patients. Much less being able to shop around.
There have been and still are many things that could be and should be improved in the healthcare industry. This and so many other glaring examples of the failures of socialist….almost ANYTHING, show why the government should keep its mitts to itself.
From the deceitful way it was initially passed to the laughably inept web presence (particularly its “face plant” of an introduction back in 2014), to the dishonest representations by the President about “keeping your doctor/health plan if you like it”, and now on to the incompetence of its implementation via all of these government subsidized co-ops that are dropping like flies, virtually every negative prediction of the effects of Obamacare have proven true.
How much longer do we accept “leadership” by these arrogant idiots!?
This is not the first failure of a company involved with obamacare. There have been many, and most likely many more will follow. Hopefully the Republicans with TRUMP this mess!
Incompetent management is the problem. They can charge rates to an 80% loss ratio. If they can’t get by on a 20% gross margin, then they are incompetent or overpaid. Maybe if they weren’t stuffing so many millions into their own pockets (there is absolutely no justification for that), the business would be successful.
When you keep robbing Peter to pay Paul, after a while Paul says forget this crap!
I had lots of patients that lost their good insurance and couldn’t afford anything worth a darn. Thanks to Obamacare my retirement came a decade early, thereby contributing further to the shortage of primary care providers.
Obamacare is just another example of how the democrats don’t understand business. Dems count on raising taxes to get to extra funds, something you cannot do in business.
Obamacare was doomed due to a poor, unthoughtout implementation plan. The penalties of not signing were actually incentives to not sign up for the young and healthy. Therefore, premiums, subsidized and apparently not refunded by the Fed to the carriers, were collected mostly for the sick. Adverse selection where no healthy people were joining, thus increasing loss ratios. Doomed from the start.
Jack, Progressive Socialist solutions have never worked anywhere they have been tried. They lied about everything, force fed it to the country and now look at their mess. Then, after making the mess, they say to Republicans, clean it up or they start shouting we should have had total Government single payer which makes Obamacare look like a bargain by comparison.
Progressive socialist solutions have worked well for many years, in many other countries. Although that is partially because they didn’t have a certain political party sabotaging everything, just so they can say that it doesn’t work.
AND, they didn’t already have half the population on some sort of welfare, AND they don’t have a military because they let the rest of the world protect them, AND they do not have as many freeloaders and illegal immigrants draining their resources, AND I’m sure there are several other reasons why it appears marginally successful.
intergrity, I see you don’t have any more patience for a Progressive troll than I do. You do a wonderful job putting them in their place. Progressive Socialism is a mental disease as on full display on every blog we have.

Please support your statement with specific examples including what program, in what country, with what income tax rate, sales tax rate, and VAT tax if any. If a medical plan, please include supporting details regarding wait times for services in days, weeks, months, or years, and the availability of services.
The Oliarcare boondoggle is living up to the predictions made before it went into effect. THIS IS OBAMA’s “LEGACY” that he is so concerned about – the legacy of failure.
Every few months it seems like one of these writers copies the prior such story, edits the name of the state that recently went belly up, and drops in the name of the latest state to become a casualty of the work of Jonathan Gruber, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi Galore.
“We have to pass it to find out what’s in it.”
Seeing the pain inflicted on American citizens by the passage of ACA, it should be renamed the Gallstone Health Care Act.
In the end it is simple math that trumps ideology. Has been throughout history. Never changes. This was never about healthcare. When I was born we did not have health insurance. Much to everyone’s surprise we survived. The idea itself is not even that old in the scope of things but you have people running around like their heads were cut off saying they can’t live without it.You insure for the catastrophic and the rest you pay for as you go…..just like you do with everything else in your life. DUH! We have smart phones that cost hundreds, high cost cable but we can’t afford a trip to the doctor? Can’t fix stupid.
JayMac, I guess the ideology has changed. If we’ve decided as a country that our goal is to provide the best known treatments, drugs, and technology to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay or their overall health then we cannot control the costs. The insurance companies aren’t to blame. They’re are just a mechanism to move the money back & forth. My guess is that when you were born doctors didn’t make as much money (when adjusted for inflation).
SW, you are right that the ideology has changed in this country. It started when Obama was first elected. Do you remember his statement – We live in the greatest country in the world. Join me as I seek to fundamentally transform it. By the way, instead of attempting to fix the economy which is still languishing nearly 8 years later, he proceeded to transform the Healthcare system by passing his “signature” legislation. 6 years of the idiocy later, it has been transformed to the worst of the worst possible scenarios for millions of Americans.
Hi FFA. I bet you were pleased to see your Cubbies having the starting infield at the All Star game. Kris Bryant is a kid I like a lot. Reckon the Cubbies will trade him to the Rangers for Beltre’ and a couple of minor leaguers? I won’t hold my breath on that trade happening.
Obama sure has a great legacy, doesn’t he? I wonder how many visitors will go to the library on the south side of Chicago.
No Sophomore Slump for that kid. Seems to be the real deal. The infield is very impressive. Fowler made it too but didnt go due to injury. Hoping to see Arietta & Sale pitch against each other in the Cross Town Classic.
I seen the Canadian Parliament chanting 4 more years for OBama. Well, he is available. He wont move back to Chicago. Protecting him against every day violence aside from the normal Retired President risk is just going to cost way too much.
Saw a good political cartoon this morning. Showed him in a suit with a cape (like Superman), but they were calling him Divider-Man. He was thinking – The nation needs healing. How can I make things worse?
He makes everything worse every time he opens his mouth. It isn’t even close on the all time bad Presidents. Ron thought it was a great idea to vote for him twice. Unbelievably stupid!
Did you see the one that said Hillary for Prison Resident? I’d vote for that!!

Apparently, the Canadian Parliament is as stupid as I previously heard when I vacationed there frequently in the past with Canadian friends, and heard about their healthcare system from someone in that field.
integrity, I see a lot of political cartoons on Townhall which has the best. By the way, there is one out on the net now of the Employee of the month for the Dallas PD. It is the robot with explosives attached that blew that shooter away after he murdered 5 cops. Why risk more cops lives if you can send a robot in to do the job.
It would be better, but that idea was flatly rejected by the trio of Obama, Pelosi and Reid. They had their idea of Progressive Socialism, force feed their program through and created the biggest farce of all time.
if only the republicans were willing to lay out their alternative plan in its entirety, then we could make an educated decision to either stick with the super-duper obamacare failure, go back to the old system, or try the republican’s option.
@confused: Republicans have a plan. If it were revealed now, the DNC would attack it with lies about its viability. I have some insight into some aspects of the RNC plan thru a contact in that field…. it solves most of the problems and requires little government intervention. Stay tuned and stop making empty criticisms that won’t hold up after the details are provided so close to Election Day that Hillary won’t be able to criticize it with anything substantive that she can lie about.
how is it an empty criticism to say the republican’s haven’t laid out their alternative plan yet? they haven’t!! can you share ANY specifics on ANY item in their plan? if yes, i’m all ears. if no, get off my back until they actually release their plan. either way, i stand by my statement:
if only the republicans were willing to lay out their alternative plan in its entirety, then we could make an educated decision to either stick with the super-duper obamacare failure, go back to the old system, or try the republican’s option.
Confused, in my opinion, they are waiting on the rate hikes to hit peoples mail boxes (Nov 1st). Weeks before the election, people will get slammed. The repubs will be all over it. Trumps new campaign slogan will be “If you like your rate, you can keep it. Vote for Billary”.
People tend to vote for what helps out their check book. With what seems to be a 40% hike looming, well thats gonna be the hot button topic – I HOPE.

It’s EMPTY criticism because it is a WASTE OF TIME to outline a plan that Obama would VETO if it were introduced now.
Why do you need to know specifics of the plan NOW? It will not be introduced until Trump is sworn in.
Are you as big a baby as I can surmise by your childish comment to reveal a secret plan now, before the election?
And, by the way; Pelosi hid her bill from EVERY Republican until it was introduced. Republicans were LOCKED OUT OF MEETINGS on the proposals and…
BEING THE HYPOCRITE THAT YOU ARE…. you asked for publishing of the Republican plan AFTER Nancy Pelosi Galore infamously and ignominiously said “We have to pass it (ACA) to find out what’s in it.” Hypocrite!

I’ve used the VA for many years, and I’ve never had a problem (including in Phoenix).
