I have heard that the Sandusky scandal cost PSU closer to $250M. There, what happened took place years ago. Then when it came to light and all the “me too” claims poured in the school had no response but to panic and pay. I’m not excusing what he did but when the money started to flow so did the accusations. Hmmm.

Glenn – you are correct. Unlike the Michigan State people, Sandusky was retired from Penn State and employed by the Second Mile chairty and it was in that role the abuses allegedly occurred.. Penn State had the deep pockets and they bungled the crisis managment, investigation, and payments from the start. Penn state opened the check book to make it go away. And as you suggest, there was a common thread of many later claimants – they all went thru “repressed memory” therapy from the same “therapist”. Hmmmm, as you say.
Michigan State will entually payout a lot more for different reasons.

    Glenn,
Do you think that it is possible that had to do with it being shameful to be molested by a male especially if you are male? We live in a very homophobic country sadly.

All I know is that PSU was male molestation and MSU is young female molestation. If they don’t work a settlement that is roughly the same as PSU, someone from our gov’t is gong to scream Gender Bias!!!

      Full disclosure: PSU grad here.

My take: Sandusky is right where he should be and will die there, hopefully sooner than later. Is it possible that a few people made up claims because they saw $$$? Sure, it’s possible. It’s also possible and more likely that a bunch more victims never came forward out of shame. Even more likely is that the victims kept the cycle of abuse going, which is even more of a tragedy.

I fully believe Paterno knew of the allegations of abuse and chose not to take them seriously. Paterno was treated as absolute god when I went there. I remember walking past him once on campus and was unable to speak. I don’t believe he was the mastermind behind the cover up, but I DO believe that he was in a position where he could have stopped everything.

Penn State was and still is a great school, and I’ll be a Penn Stater until the day I die. That being said, I’m also a father, and I take that title MUCH more seriously. More needs to be done to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again ANYWHERE.
