I think compliance would be higher had one of the political parties not intentionally downplayed the seriousness of the virus, lied to the public about it (kids don’t get very sick – the flu is worse) and even as recently as less than a month ago constantly continued to reference that the virus was behind us (RNC convention).
But yeah, the media is at fault too: maybe if Fox News and other right-wing media outlets told people from the start that wearing masks and social distancing would reduce the spread of the virus rather than making those things political, compliance would be higher too.
