People in this business know right from wrong. When you put your own interests well, well above those of the insured, well, bam, we gotta ‘nuther broker/underwriter rippin’ off another insured.
WE owe our livelihoods to the (mostly)good ole insureds everywhere.
Three cheers for the insureds who have to put up with the bull—- of doing business with us.
Isn’t it a sad reflection on our profession that it is felt necessary to have such an “Ethics Awareness Month”. I suppose that if those in senior and responsible positions do not set an example by carrying out their day-to-day business in an ethical manner then we will all suffer as a result.
Whatever happened to the common law of agency and the principle of uberrimae fides, which used to underpin our profession?
Well, as the song goes, The times they are a-changing. Society has changed, like it or not. Well publicised cheating by authorities in high places, both corporate and municipal, is in the news on what seems like a daily basis. The reasons for these changes are numerous, and beyond the scope of a few quick comments. It’s appropriate to step back, take a deep breath, and give this some thought. If the CPCU Society Ethics Awareness Month helps make us give some time to this topic, more power to them.
